[UNDER REVIEW] Activation Issue and Crashes
[UNDER REVIEW] Activation Issue and Crashes
I bought your app about a week ago through google play. (I then installed the NEON version from your website manually.) Unfortunately, I have not been able to get the app to stop expiring. I thought that it might be caused by my firewall and antivirus software but it still happens when I disable the firewall and antivirus functions.
I thought it might be caused by my internet being off during your apps attempt to verify the license. I try to turn on data before i start the app. Sometimes this will allow me to use the app for almost a day, but other times it will expire in an hour.
I don't know if the issue is with the google license verification because it will often restart if I close the app and start it again. Other times it doesn't. This seems pretty random.
When I click the "Activate" button on the Expiration screen, nothing happens. I have to close it and try to restart.
In general, this expiration nag is ruining your app. If someone wants an audiophile experience, they don't want to be constantly interrupted. Right now, someone using the free trial version will have a better experience than someone with the paid app. You need to have a licensing design that works better with people who don't have their internet turned on all the time. For instance, can you extend the time between license checks? Can you put in an option to manually update the license which could be used by someone like me to click when they have their internet turned on? It would also be good to have some feedback from the app about whether the license has been successfully verified or not. This would allow me to turn off my data connection when license has been verified.
An even bigger problem: crashes. This might be related to the above issue. Sometimes if I disconnect my headphone and then later reconnect, it will completely crash my phone. The screen will not turn on and the buttons don't work. I can't even restart the phone. I have to pull the battery in order to start my phone again. This has happened three times so far in the last week. I tried to restart your app after a trial verification by unplugging the headset and plugging it back in. (I have auto start when headset is connected selected.) This crashed the phone as described. I think that this happened twice when I got the expiration notice.
It happened a third time yesterday. I was using neutron for about half an hour and unplugged the headset to use it for something else. When I plugged it back in about 10 minutes later, my phone would not respond. I had to pull the battery again. I could not tell if the app had expired or not because the screen was off when I plugged in my headset.
Please address these problems as this is completely ruining my experience with neutron. Right now, I cannot recommend this app to anyone and finding this very frustrating.

Re: Activation Issue and Crashes
Hi Paul!
Thank you for your detailed problem description.
It is very strange that license verification is causing so many problems to you because for example in my experience of using Neutron (daily, in car) I never had 'Trial Expired' problem. With or without Internet being active.
Could it be the case that instability is caused by CyanogenMod firmware you are using? Normally original firmware from the producer of device behaves without strange issues/problems. Anyway I will double check implementation and will try to reproduce the steps you described.
> When I plugged it back in about 10 minutes later, my phone would not respond.
It can be a problem of firmware. Android is doing audio re-routing internally and application does not do anything serious. If you get frozen device it means that something went wrong inside Android OS. May be Neutron used some Android API which were buggy but normally plugging/unplugging works always and does not have problems.
Best regards,
Dmitry.

It is possible, but i have not had problems with licensing apps previously. I will look for an update to the ROM - perhaps that will help. I will try reinstalling the app first though.

I was able to reproduce the problem. Neutron expired again about a day ago. I unplugged the headset and plugged it back in again. It crashed. Had to pull the battery again. When the app is running normally, i plug and unplug the headphones regularly - and no problems. In order to reproduce this problem - assuming that it isn't isolated to just me - you will have to test using an unlicensed expiring version of Neutron. No problems when the app is not expired.
Thanks.

Do you mean that you unplug headset in the same moment when UI is showing Trial Expired message?

Re: Activation Issue and Crashes
Yes, right after it appears. It try it to see if this will force a quick restart instead of killing app and open again.dmitrykos wrote:> Neutron expired again about a day ago. I unplugged the headset and plugged it back in again. It crashed.

It has happened about 4 different times now. Two times I unplugged and then plugged my headset back in immediately after the Trial Expired message appeared. I thought this might force the app to restart - since i have auto start with headset connection selected - but it froze my phone: screen was off and all the buttons stopped working, had to pull battery to reboot. (Two other times the screen was off and I could not see the Trial expire screen because of that).
In order to restart, i have to kill the app before restarting; otherwise, it will force close and not start. The "Activate" button on the Trial Expired screen does not respond. The Close button works, but this doesn't help because it force closes usually when I try to restart it. I normally have to kill the app first before it will work again. It will work again for a little while until it "expires" again. Then start over.

Re: Activation Issue and Crashes
Ok, thank you very much for the additional details. Will try to reproduce using your steps.
Re: Activation Issue and Crashes
UPDATE.
I reinstalled the app, but it still expired.
I updated the CM9 rom to the latest version. In the process, I wiped the system partition and the dalvik cache. This should have eliminated any remains of previous trial version. Unfortunately, none of this helped. It still expired.
I did notice that the app did not seem to expire when I selected the option to run as "Service." It ran for 24 hours. I then turned off the Service option, and it expired after a few hours. I then turned "Service" back on; so far, it has run without expiring for 24+ hours. Perhaps this will help you pinpoint the cause of the expiration issue.
In any case, I will update you if the app expires when in Service mode.

Hmm... Thank you for this observation. Will try it myself with hope to reproduce the issue.

Re: [UNDER REVIEW] Activation Issue and Crashes
Hi. I don't know if my problem is related to the OP but it sounds similar.
Yesterday I downloaded the trial version from the Google play store. The app worked great for the first 30 minutes or so. Then I started getting the trial expired notice. It has continued whether I'm on wifi or 4G data. The app opens and only runs for about a minute before giving the notice.
I have tried running the app in service mode as suggested by the OP but that hasn't fixed the problem.
My hardware is HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon. I'm running a modded CM7 rom that's very stable and has had no trouble running any licensed apps.
I was planning to purchase the app but don't want to run into the same problem as the OP or worse have it not even run in service mode.
Any ideas or updates on this issue

Re: [UNDER REVIEW] Activation Issue and Crashes
Hi! I can't really comment much about it as there could be many reasons for Trial Expired. As to paid version, Google Play allows to refund purchase any time and if you are getting Trial Expired constantly there is no problem to refund your purchase, so do not be afraid of loosing money and getting stuck with not working app. Just write to: neutronmp@gmail.com in case of the problem. But please note, if Trial Expired showed up it means that cached license reply expired (some 3-4 weeks) and Neutron needs to refresh information about license through Google Play app.
