First Steps after Installation

When you start Neutron for the first time you'll have to choose a language

and a source for your music

stp-source.jpg

"Automatic" looks at the usual places for anything there is, "Manual" lets you decide what to use.

Depending on your operating system you might have to add a directory before you can select it. Select it and confirm your selection. Neutron will then scan the directory and fill its music library.

It might be a good idea to tell your operating system not to optimize the Neutron app, not to hinder its background activities etc. . Otherwise you might run into problems while scanning huge sources.

Ok, just in case this helps anyone....
My SMB share scan actually finished and the file numbers found look about right. Woo hoo!
I changed the app option to keep running in the background and gave app Android permission to run in the background. It seems to have worked.

You'll then see the so-called Playing-Now-Screen.

There's a line of buttons above, the so-called Top Panel. The white one on the left will invoke the equalizer screen, which you can use to tell Neutron how to play your music. The white one on the right will invoke the library and track list, which you can use to tell Neutron what music it should play. The second button on the right, the one with the steering-wheel-symbol, will open the Settings menu.

You might want to browse a bit through these screens. When you've found your music you might want to change the way your albums are defined, see How is an album defined and what art is displayed . When that is done you probably would like to use the equalizer, see How to work with the equalizer .

Should you rather like to change the screens with swipes then deactivate "Settings > User Interface > Swipe to Change Track" and activate "Settings > User Interface > Swipe Screen".

Should you not like the dark default theme you can choose another one, see Themes and Colors .

There are things that can be activated or deactived and might be deactivated after installation, see Settings > User Interface > Optional Features.

So, once you've chosen music to play the playing now screen looks something like this :

  • You can configure the top panel in Settings > User Interface > Panel: Top
  • On the left upper edge of or in the album art is a button to briefly invoke the volume slider
  • On the left lower edge of or in the album art is a button to switch the album art to an rms widget and back
  • below the album art are buttons for playback mode, ratings, shuffle mode
  • below that are the play control buttons
  • then comes the progress bar with time information
  • the input/output-information directly below that can be switched with the three-dot-button in the lower right edge
  • a short tap on the song title opens the track list
  • a long press on the song title opens a file information window
  • with the icon in the lower left corner you can open the categories containing the track
You can configure this screen in Settings > User Interface > Playing Now

Should the music play but you hear nothing make sure that the "Mute" button on the equalizer screen isn't activated.

And should you want to reset to defaults, there's a "Defaults" button in all settings where you might need one, e.g. the one here in the middle :

The equalizer screen sports a spectrum window, which also displays the active eq curve.

Below the eq sliders there's another list of buttons used to control the DSP ( data signal processing ) effects, can be configured via Settings > Playback > DSP Effect . A short tap on a button switches its activity status, a long press lets you configure its options.

A top on the spectrum analyzer let's it fill the screen. In the upper right corner is a button where you can switch between a linear and logarithmic axis. Further options can be found in Settings > User Interface > Spectrum Analyzer.

In the tracklist you can browse and start tracks. Long press on a track will open the file information window. There's a button below with which you can start the list from the position where you stopped playing.

With the arrow buttons below you can drill up and down between the single tracks and the categories in the library.
