Radio Volume

Post by Siva0k0m7 » Fri Oct 01, 2021 11:47 pm

Internet radio volume tends to vary rather than conform to a broadcast standard.

Perhaps we could have something similar to the existing AGP function but following a windowed "on the fly" EBUR128 calculation instead and adjusting preamp up or down accordingly.

Some protocol could be used to avoid raising the volume unnecessarily e.g. recognising low volume/low complexity instances or limiting the rate of change after the initial setting.

I've used a player with an "on the fly" option in it's replaygain section and this worked pretty well.

What would the difference be between this proposed solution and the existing dynamics compressor ? I suggest you try that ( and/or the normalization function for stored data ).

I guess with the right settings it could be the same. I found the compressor to be irritating in the past.

Yes, I also think it's a question of the right settings. The three predefined compressor presets probably are optimized for the use case of dynamic music ( e.g. classical ), and not for the use case of a sequence of non-dynamic songs ( e.g. pop or rock ) with different volume each. Perhaps someone can contribute better settings for the latter use case ?

It seems that there are upper limits on the time settings, so it might not be possible to define the proper settings for this use case. I'm no sme, but afaik the compressor parameters work as follows ( unit msec ):
  • look-ahead : (future) position of the window in time ( 0 ... 250, default 30 )
  • window : length of this window ( 1 ... 1000, default 5 )
  • attack : how long it takes to react to a signal increase ( 0 ... 250, default 60 )
  • release : how long it takes to react to a signal decrease ( 0.001 ... 2500, default 260 )
If you want to give it a try you might use maximum values for these time parameters and see what happens. Feel free to ask neutronmp@gmail.com for advice.
