[Question] Does Peak Normalization take into consideration intersample True Peaks?

Post by mvpthemichael » Fri Nov 19, 2021 1:23 pm

Or is it just looking at sample peaks? When I run Peak Normalization on my flac files with a flat EQ, a lot of the tracks show peaks above 0 DB so I am curious if these are intersample peaks being detected.

Where do you see the 0-dB-excession ? In the spectrum analyzer ? Linear or logarithmic ? If linear, that's an artefact of the linear display. Also see "Settings > User Interface > Spectrum Analyzer > Scale" - the scaling of the spectrum display is somewhat arbitrary.

As to the normalization algorithm, feel free to ask neutronmp@gmail.com .

Also see here as to the "Flat" switch in the Spectrum settings.

Thanks! The values I am seeing are not from the spectrum analyzer though. When you run normalization it tells you how much up/down the gain is modified on each track so I see specific values like "DB: -0.006091"

Okay ... and how do you see "peaks above 0 dB" ? A positive increase in the normalization wouldn't mean that the result is above 0 dB ...

Yes, but that is a negative gain applied, not positive. Hence the "-"

Fine, Okay ... and how/where do you see "peaks above 0 dB" ? You wrote that in your initial post.

... or do you think that because the gain applied there must have been peaks above 0 dB ? Well, if you hadn't normalized then ( with this equalizer settings ) there would have been peaks above 0 dB, and so Neutron applied negative gain. That's what the normalization is supposed to do, find the maximum possible gain without distortion.
