I need more than the available bands on the EQ, [...] How can I do so? What is the max number of bands on the included variable-setting parametric equaliser?
Up to 60 bands are possible. See
here . In short : choose a preset with more bands or/and add bands to an existing preset.

Another question would be why on earth one would use more than a dozen ... but that's up to you.

Excellent, I found it and just replied to my original request. Looks like I can have what I need if I get the paid version.
Why so many bands? Haha. Sonarworks SoundID and even PEACE equaliser allows one to tune one's headphones precisely to tested Harmon curves. And they're asking for 10 parametric bands as a requirement if you want to input the settings manually.
I'd like to use Neutron on my smartphone for that.
Wavelet too allows this, but the secondary equaliser they include is fixed frequency with rubbish frequencies (my ears finds the treble fix perfect, but the bass a little too excessive).
Perhaps one day Neutron player will allow settings import like PEACE does.

IMHO - Budget brands aside, every headphone is designed with a sound signature, or character, typically inherent of the brand or series. If one doesn't work for your taste, you may be better off moving to a different model or brand. Invoking a ridiculous number of graphic or parametric bands of equalization in the player to apply some form of neutralization to this simply adds more potential for other distortions and power requirements.

I agree. My personal method : buy headphones for a reasonable price that roughly fit my preferences (which is a flat frequency response), then look for an existing FRC-preset to further flatten the curve (necessary due to the reasonable price), slightly edited to mitigate an individual hearing issue,

then if need be use the eq to change the music. For the FRC the existing 10-band-parametric presets are good enough (for me), and for the EQ I use an adapted 4-band-preset ( 100Hz and 200Hz low shelves, 4kHz and 8kHz high shelves ).
