Playback failed on iPhone

Post by Eggy2103 » Sat Jun 22, 2024 12:04 pm

I have an issue playing files on my iPhone 13 from a Synology NAS that have been created from CD rather than purchased/downloaded. I have a substantial iTunes library that is a mixture of music purchased through the store and other music imported from CD. I have transferred the library to the NAS, enabled the Media server and can connect to the library no problem. Everything I have purchased plays fine, everything that I imported from CD comes up FAILED when I try to play it back. The only thing I can see that might be causing the problem is the PCM designation in the file format, as opposed to AAC on the purchased files.

Am I missing something in the settings for the app, or is this just not supported?

I can but how would you like to me supply it? Forum won't accept the .m4a extension and if I try add a zip of it I get the message the file is too large. Is there another way of posting files?

Yes, there's the cloud. You can put files there, tell the cloud to let everybody access them and provide a link here.

Thank you, that worked. Neutron can play that file. It's an AAC file. But as I understood your post you've got problems with PCM files ? Could we have an example for that too ?

It's all PCM.
Flac, aac/m4a, aiff, wav, etc., all PCM.

No, aac/m4a is not PCM.
Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) is an audio coding standard for lossy digital audio compression. It was designed to be the successor of the MP3 format and generally achieves higher sound quality than MP3 at the same bit rate.
Neutron converts it into PCM, as it does with everything else, with the exception of DSD if told not to do so.

Thank you for clarifying. At the output, it's all PCM (to Neutron). I've just never run into raw .pcm files, always something converted from it. OP's post said "PCM designation in the file format" and I didn't know if that meant, "these are raw .pcm files ripped from a CD, which Neutron cannot play" or "Neutron's output info shows PCM, and I cannot play these files which I have ripped from a CD"

It's not so much regarded or interpreted as PCM, it has been transformed into PCM by Neutron. That's the first thing Neutron does with any data, with the single exception of direct DSD.

Yes, it would be nice to see an example, to check whether these files are really called ".pcm", and really are pure PCM, which might indeed be problematic
Audio formats: MP1, MP2, MP3, OGG (Vorbis), FLAC, WMA, WMA Lossless (16-bit), AC3, AAC, M4A, M4B, M4R, MP4, 3GP, 3G2, MOV, ALAC, APE (Monkey's Audio), WV (WavPack), MPC (MusePack), WAV, AU, AIFF, MPG/MPEG (audio), AVI (audio), iTunes/Windows Media (non DRM), OPUS
Neutron of course knows PCM, but as you pointed out that typically comes in container formats like WAV.
