Need help with Neutron Player for Windows

Post by DSperber » Fri Jun 21, 2024 7:57 pm

Is this the right place to go for support on Neutron Player for Windows?

I've installed it on my Win10 laptop, and have plugged in my new Neutron HiFi DAC V1.

I've copied the few basic settings tweaks as are in place for Neutron Player on my Samsung S21 Ultra. I also set "file system" to point to my parent directory that contains my entire music collection, same as I did on the phone. And I pushed REFRESH next to "sources", expecting that this would then allow me to use the Neutron Player on Windows and have it behave just like it does on the phone.

Well, not the case. For example I can't enter "search" data at all. Seems the keyboard is not causing character to appear in the search data area.

Also, the program seems to randomly close spontaneously (or else it is crashing).

Is there any documentation somewhere that speaks specifically to the non-phone version for Windows? Or something basic that I must do that I perhaps haven't done in my installation process?

Thanks.

It would seem you didn't create a proper source. "File System" is the first step, then you'll have to choose a directory. I suggest you uninstall, reinstall, don't copy settings and tweaks, start with a propoer source.

Can someone please tell me how to accomplish "long press" on a song in the "media library" list presentation with the Windows player, in order to generate the File presentation which then allows adding that file to either the "queue" or a "playlist".

Obviously there is a long press gesture on a phone. But not such thing on a computer. And there's no right-click implemented to trigger popup context menu or any special button to push, to trigger that "File" popup.

So that's really my question: how do you get the "File" presentation to appear using Windows player?

Just hold down the mouse button, that's all there is to it.

AHA! So that's the trick. Didn't think to try that but now it makes perfect sense.

Thank you.

Next question: how do I prevent CD audio tracks (i.e. FLAC) from being played at 48Khz through the HiFi DAC V1, when they are actually 44100?

Using the Android Neutron player on my S21 Ultra phone, per help from others I tweaked the "audio hardware" settings:

(a) ENABLE hardware volume - this IS present in the Windows version of the player
(b) ENABLE direct USB access - this IS NOT PRESENT in the Windows version of the player.

And sure enough the display on the DAC shows 44100 when playing these FLAC music files with Neutron player.

IN contrast, with the Windows version of the player, again there is no "direct USB access" available, but there is another available option that is not present for the Android Neutron player:

(c) ENABLE exclusive access (perhaps this is equivalent to the "direct USB access" in the Android app)? Anyway I have it ENABLED but am still showing 48Khz on the DAC display when playing these 44100 FLAC files.

So my question is: with the Windows version of Neutron player, what settings must I set in order to play 44100 audio files exactly as 44100 via the DAC? I want to see the same 44100 using Neutron Windows version as when using Neutron Android version.

What have I overlooked? (and I am running the purchased version of the Windows app)

Well, looks like false alarm!

I disconnected the DAC from the Windows laptop, and reconnected it to the phone. Just wanted to confirm my settings, and the fact that it displayed 44.1khz when using Neutron player on the phone. And it did.

Then I disconnected the DAC from the phone and reconnected it to the laptop. And now, amazingly, sure enough Windows Neutron plays the tracks and now shows the desired 44.1khz! I swear, before it was showing 48khz, and now it shows 44.1khz.

I suspect something relating to Windows, and the USB DAC "sounds" settings, etc.

Anyway it looks like I must have "audio hardware" set correctly in Settings.

Problem fixed (by itself!). Case closed.

Yes, after attaching an external DAC and/or switching the direct/exclusive state it may take some time or a reboot of the player to get things working properly.

I'm guessing it was the fact that the "exclusive access" on the Windows version that was crucial to passing through the music files for playback via DAC exactly as-is and untouched, i.e. at 44.1khz. I'm guessing it really is conceptually the same item as the "enable direct USB" option on the Android phone version.

By initial default, neither option is ENABLED on the respective players. They are both off by default. So I had to ENABLE them in both program versions.

My guess is that this is such a fundamental change to performance and behavior that the actual activation of the option now requires a "restart" of the program and/or drivers.

I'm guessing my disconnection of the DAC from the laptop was the first step to "restart". Sound playback reverted to the Realtek HD Audio laptop speakers. And then when I reconnected the DAC to the laptop sound playback once again switched to the DAC "speakers", which itself involved reinstalling/reactivating the driver from scratch, which now had its handshake with Neutron now in its newly configured "direct USB" state.

Anyway, probably would also have happened if I'd simply re-booted the laptop.

Again, issue has now solved itself and is in my rear view mirror.
