I have an issue with the distorted playback on Fiio R7 on current Neutron player version (2.24.3) and several previous versions. I'm not sure in which version it occured for the first time.
After starting the Neutron, it initializes and seems to open the output device for 768KHz sample rate. Playback is distorted, and nothing seems to help.
The only way I managed to make it work is to start another player application, start the playback in it, and close it. Then start the Neutron again, and it will playback the file, but samplerate indication and channel count is strange. I hope that the attached screenshots can give some clue.
The following shows file info of the track I'm trying to playback:
This is the audio hardware screen (notice the 768K indication in the status line...)
And device info page:
I can't attach one more screenshot that shows some more Audio hardware settings: Follow Source Frequency – checked, Channels: STEREO and Frequency: Default
Problem with playback on Fiio R7
Re: Problem with playback on Fiio R7
So that's no external DAC, but the Neutron App runs on the Fiio ?
As far as I can see you're playing a file, that has a sampling rate of 48 kHz, and Neutron doesn't upsample, but uses 48 kHz. Why the DAC shows 768 kHz I cannot tell.
I suggest you do some testing with different sampling rates, e.g. by switching oversampling on, or follow source frequency off and manually selecting a frequency.
Perhaps the Fiio has a problem recognising the sampling rate coming from Neutron ? And if you anyway intend to use high sampling rates then it might be advisable to let Neutron do the upsampling, then Neutron's DSP can exploit that, too.
Perhaps you set the sampling rate of both Neutron and the Fiio to some middle value, say 192 kHz, and see whether that works better ?

Re: Problem with playback on Fiio R7
I have followed one of your advices on some other thread, and did a "reset to default" on the Audio hardware page.
Now it started to work properly!
Follow source frequency does follow it properly and Device info page is reflecting it correctly. Also fixed output frequency is working as expected, oversampling as well...
So I'm not sure what caused this issue, but after reset to defaults, it is working fine!
Thanks for your assistance!
