Settings Backup and Restore

Post by 24Bit.96kHz » Fri Sep 05, 2014 10:45 pm

Hi,
I'm not sure why you don't have it yet, but it would be nice to see a Settings Backup in a future update.
Recently I had to reinstall the app and then reconfigure all the settings from memory, which was a main feat in itself, and if I had the option to restore them from settings I could have saved myself some time.

Edit:
I dont appreciate having to go through Androids directories to extract and backup files. The last time this happened I accidentally deleted the wrong folder leaving some functions on my phone inoperable and ultimately having to factory default/reset my droid. I was not happy.

Android 12 - Can't restore backup settings.

Post by RAGEdemon » Thu Mar 24, 2022 10:47 pm

Dear Chaps,

I am trying to move my Neutron settings onto my new device from my old device.

I have read that to make a backup, simply copy the /NeutronMP folder.

Unfortunately, the guide does not tell you where the /NeutronMP folder is located, which is just silly. I cannot find it on my old device after exhaustive searching. I have even tried the Root partition, which most file explorers don't allow access without ROOT. - I do not have ROOT on my new device.

I tried changing some settings on the new device to see if that would create a new NewtronMP folder on the new device, but I am unable to find it. It is likely located in the inaccessible folders in the root partition.

Why on earth tell people to make backups by copying the NeutronMP folder without telling us the full path, especially if it is created in hidden/inaccessale folders?

Great software, but the GUI and settings/options/way it does things is down right confusing/frustrating.

Couldn't there simply backup to cloud/local option in the settings?

Anyway, please help me restore my settings on my new device from my old device.

Thank you.

the guide does not tell you where the /NeutronMP folder is located,
On my S9 with Android 10 it looks like this :

From Android 11 on your device might use the SAF ( storage access framework ), afaik then you might not be able to access the internal directory of an application. Feel free to contact neutronmp@gmail.com for clarification. Feedback about a solution would be appreciated.

I merged the topic - there's a long running wish to implement this.

The folder exists on my old device (LineageOS 7.1 Rooted).
Unfortunately, it does not exist on my new device (Samsung Tab S7 with Android 11 stock).

Manually creating this folder by copying from older device, has no effect on NeutronMP settings (i.e. it does not work)

I shall email the address you game and update if helpful info is received - thank you.

You'd need root (or ADB is enough, maybe). The new folder is located here /data/data/com.neutroncode.mp/files/NeutronMP
It seems from Android 11 on you can't easily get to Neutron's ( or any other application's, for that matter ) internal directory.

Response from developer:

===============

Code: Select all

The best would be to install Generic apk on all devices which is not
affected by Google's SAF requirement:
https://neutroncode.com/downloads/category/1-generic-android

Try AMR64 apk.

In the future Neutron will gain possibility to backup/restore settings
and move them between devices.

Best regards,

This worked for me.
I am unsure if the app will auto-update in this manner, however...

Probably yes, but then it would overwrite with the PlayStore version, which might not be what you want, at least not until this new feature is available. For disabling this see here
  • Open Google Play Store App on your device.
  • Tap on Menu option on the top left corner of the screen.
  • Tap on My Apps and Games.
  • Under Installed tab, select the app you wish to change the auto-update option.
  • Click on More option on the top right corner of the App Home Screen.
  • Uncheck the ‘Auto-update‘ option on the prompt.
