Smart Playlists

Post by RivrStyx » Tue Apr 04, 2017 11:07 am

Smart Playlists would be a great feature. Add music auto by album, artist, genre, path maybe, year etc. Then have rules to fine tune play list. Fast and Automatic. Seen it in a few other players like player pro and forget the other ones.

When adding new music its auto picked up by these playlists you've created depending on rules chosen.

suggest take a look at the " queue " playlist .

It has many of the functions that you have suggested ( will even remove played tracks )

This thread addresses an issue raised in another thread, although that OP wasn’t exactly “asking” for a new feature but demanding with some unflattering language to have it addressed immediately as a flaw or bug in Neutron.

To clarify the difference for this request, a “PLAYLIST” is a standard list of song files, compiled to always play in a specific sort order. A personal favourites list of sorts. On the other hand, a “SMART PLAYLIST” would consist of a set of “rules” that would be applied to a defined set of songs - this could be any combination of folders, date added, date modified, artists, albums, composers, and other tags. It can be further enhanced by logic such as contains, does not contain, starts with, ends with, matches, etc.for each of these search terms. Combinations can be pretty powerful against larger libraries to craft some great dynamic sorts. And they would update automatically, as music is added to or removed from the library as they do not have direct relative links to any one song file.

There are other apps that have a similar feature, and I think it can be a great addition to Neutron.

Dynamic Filter with Presets

Post by blaubär » Wed Nov 03, 2021 5:07 am

Then let's make a proposal that would fit into the way Neutron does things :
  • add a filtering mechanism
  • with a preset-mechanism to store and access the filters
  • a filter would select a subset from the set of tracks in a tracklist
  • by applying user-definable conditions
  • filtering would always be done at runtime, results won't automatically be stored
  • the result would be presented as a tracklist
  • which could then be played as a whole
  • and/or songs therein could be played
  • and/or added to the queue or a playlist
  • a filter preset would contain a definition of the underlying tracklist ( not the tracks themselves ) and the filtering conditions
  • a simpler version could just work on All Songs, all selections to be done via the filtering conditions
  • the existing filter presets might constitute a new category alongside artists, albums, songs
Example : you always want to see the latest songs from your favourite band: you enter the library, choose category Artist, select the band, open All Songs from that artist, then somewhere would be a button "Create Filter on this tracklist", after pressing that you could define conditions like "all tracks added in the last year", the tracklist would be updated to only show these songs, you could then store this filter as a preset "songs from X from the last year", if you want to access it later then you'd enter the library, select the new category "Filters", find your preset, activate it, Neutron would apply the filter and produce the tracklist with the songs that at this time fulfil the filtering conditions ( which generally will NOT be the ones that you saw when you created the filter ! ), and you could do with this resulting tracklist whatever you can do with any tracklist.

( also see this less elaborated proposal ... things like that are also called "Dynamic Playlists" )

... and I suggest not to use the term "playlist" for this :D might lead to confusion with the (static) playlists :D
